Anti-Aging: What the Science Actually Says
The anti-aging industry is worth $50+ billion annually. Not all of those products work. Let's cut through the marketing and look at what peer-reviewed research actually supports.
Tier 1: Non-Negotiable (Backed by Robust Evidence)
Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin, Adapalene) — The most researched and proven anti-aging ingredient. Accelerates cell turnover, stimulates collagen, reduces fine lines. Starting in your mid-20s is ideal for prevention.
Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) — A potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, brightens skin, and supports collagen synthesis. Must be pH 3.5 or lower.
Sunscreen (SPF 30+ Broad Spectrum) — Prevents 80% of visible facial aging. Daily use is non-negotiable.
Tier 2: Strong Evidence
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — Increases ceramide production, improves barrier function, reduces pore appearance, and addresses uneven skin tone.
Hyaluronic Acid — Holds 1000x its weight in water. Plumps skin and reduces fine lines temporarily.
Peptides — Signal molecules that tell skin to produce more collagen and elastin.
Tier 3: Promising but Emerging
Bakuchiol: Plant-based retinol alternative — gentler but with some similar benefits.
Azelaic Acid: Addresses pigmentation, rosacea, and acne simultaneously.
What Doesn't Work
- Silk cocoons, bird saliva, crane dust — beautiful marketing, zero scientific basis
- Most "stem cell" skincare — research is in early stages
- Single-ingredient products at inadequate concentrations
Building Your Anti-Aging Routine
Morning: Cleanser → Vitamin C → Moisturizer → SPF 30+
Evening: Cleanser → Retinol (2-3 nights) → Niacinamide (other nights) → Moisturizer
Never introduce multiple actives at once. One new product every 4-6 weeks.
